LPHS Meeting a Blow-Out!

I will post more on this soon, including video.

For now, all I can say is how humbling it was.

It seems cliche to say that teachers influence students, but Ms. Eshoo's record of achievement and inspiration is, well, humbling.

Consider this an open thread to discuss what happened at LPHS tonight.

Video will be up sometime tomorrow.

It was awesome to see such an outpour of affection for a teacher. I was waiting for a bell to ring to indicate when an angel earned its wings.

There was one alarming comment made by the LSC chair that made me think last night. Early on, the chair commented that there is nothing the LSC could do about this incident. Forget that she is on the LSC for a second. She is a parent of a student. LPHS, or any school, exists to benefit the school community: students, parents, and other community members. If the parents at LPHS feel they have their hands tied, how does this bode for the rest of CPS schools?

You are lucky you have the courage to consider such possibilities as walking out. Students have more power than they realize, and a walkout would let the administrators know you're not going to allow injustices to go unnoticed. You could cut up little triangles of paper from thrown out books, fill up big garbage bags with them and drop them from the top of a main stairwell when everyone will see. Injustices done to Mrs. Eshoo will eventually be visited on everyone because the real victim is education.

Cally Raddatz,

I am impressed with the students at LPHS. Too often, everyone forgets that we all exist because of you, the students. Make your voices heard any way you can. This is about what is best for the students; every now and then you must remind people.

LPHS student's education is being ruined because of how Karvelas is running the school. LPHS NEEDS A NEW, USEFUL, & HELPFUL PRINCIPAL! If LPHS does not change its principal or Karvelas does not change the way she is running the school, LPHS rank will go down also the student's education will too because she is not doing anything to improve it; she makes it worse.

Maybe - just maybe - we should attempt to see things from multiple perspectives and not just *ASSUME* that Dr. Karvelas can't do her job objectively. We should also look at the fact that she has done more for the regular students than other principals have in the past.

Also, explain to me how the students' education is being "ruined" because of the removal of one librarian. That's not really saying much for the skills of the teachers or the hard work that we all put in to make LPHS a successful school.

Talk about giving one person too much power - you people need to make a decision. Either give her power to make decisions in this school as she's been trained to do, or don't blame her for everything that goes wrong.

I was a former LPHS student and I know that the previous principals did a much better job. Karvelas barely did anything to help make LHPS better. LPHS is getting ruined because most of the good teachers were fired. There were many petitions by students who have experienced how the teachers taught and wanted them to stay. If Karvelas was doing such a great job, why did she get rid of most of the good teachers?

Not including the students comments, most of the talk on this blog comes from three people: Victor(his blog duh), Marty McGreal, and Andrew Martinek, oh wait, make that four when George wakes up in the middle of the night and feels the urge. That's it. They're all so willing to jump on anything they can. They're so outraged by anything that they perceive as cps mismanagement, blah blah. Maybe the three teachers should worry about actually teaching. Sorry George that was not a shot, keep up the good work.

To anonymous at 11:20 PM,

I never criticized anybody in this situation. I just said I admire the students for standing up for what they believe. I also said it was disheartening when parents of a powerful options school feel they have no say in school matters. You should read the comments before attacking people for their posts. You should not "*ASSUME*".

Anyway, how about those Bear?

Maybe YOU should reread my post. It doesn't mention anything about you or the other two stooges criticizing anyone. Just the three of you and your facination with your own self importance.

hey anonymous, as a student at LPHS i was encouraged by the comments of those three teachers. so why don't you stop being such a hypocrite, afterall you're blogging too.

p.s. those bears are freakin awesome!

Hypocrite, hmmm? If you are a student then you have not yet learned the meaning of the word. Wise up, the three stooges of this blogoshpere are the real hypocrites. Did the lead stooge ask you to write for his little blog like he does anyone who he thinks will make him look interesting? Actually, I'm probably responding to the lead stooge right now pretending to be a student!

Who is the lead stooge?
I wouldn't be a coward and make accusations hiding under the cloak of anonymity.

My vote is for Victor.

Thanks Marty.

This thread is bordering on having the overly aggressive anonymous comments deleted.

If you have this much hate in your heart, I would suggest counseling, no surfing blogs that make your blood pressure rise.

To my co-workers, my wonderful students, and other interested educational community members who attended the L.P.H.S. LSC meeting, thank you for an amazing evening that I will never forget.

As an outsider looking in at all of this and also as a lifetime friend of Bernie Eshoo it just amazes me that in this day and age good teachers are not respected as they should be. I know Bernie Eshoo has given her heart to the students and school. We need more people who give of themselves in our schools today. I hope the parents of the students attend the next meeting. Sincerely, Colleen Barrett
