Merry Christmas...And Let's Strike?

Thanks Tribune! What do I read on Christmas morning? More strike talk.

A quick quote from the Dec. 25th Tribune story:

What is clear is that this early strike talk is making district officials and teachers nervous as they head into contract negotiations early next year. The current four-year contract will expire on June 30, about a month after teachers and assistants elect a slate of union officers.

"There's a lot of unhappy teachers out there," said Tom Stonis, a social studies teacher at Fenger High School on the Far South Side. "And there's a little buzz going on that if we don't get what we want, we're going to go on strike. But I'm not going to be around next year ... because of the strike possibilities. It's not worth it to me to go out on strike in this district."
I have talked about the possibility of a strike here, here, and here.

What model will it follow? Detroit (god forbid)?

What say you?

Well, it's your union's fault. Or perhaps it's your union president trying to make everyone re-elect her.

(These aren't my opinions, I got them free from Edspresso!)

I moved this comment from an old post, as I wanted the strike story top of the page, sorry, but I lost the links. You can see Dr. Homeslice's blog here:

I think that the spirit of unionism the way Shanker conceived it, perhaps even the way Vaughn practiced it--is dead in 2006. At my school, whenever there is mention of a possible strike, two very vocal teachers (and I'm at a small school)immediately state (and rather loudly, I might add), "I'm not going on no strike. I got bills to pay". One of these is a pre-1987 teacher. She's loud, but respected (strangely enough)and other younger teachers listen. I predict many, many, SCABS in the event of a walk-out.

There is very little feeling of community amongst teachers, I'm finding. There is sometimes a shared sense of commiseration--dealing with parent apathy, bureaucratic ineptness, etc. But I don't feel unified with my colleagues. The media "teacher bashing" has this effect of "blame your co-workers" for school problems, charter school proliferation, etc. Its poisonous. One must be careful stay clear headed. The schools aren't the problem--social malaise is. Poverty and inequality are the roots of most schools problems and that starts at the top! Every CPS school could be an Edgebrook or Ray or Saugunash if Daley wanted it. We have to remember this and be vigilant in our remembering!!
