Violence In Our Student's Lives or When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong.

Did you see the Sun-Times story about the stabbing on Thanksgiving day?

The quote from the dad really got to me: ""I didn't know she had a knife, but I'm glad she did. It saved her life," John Jones said after his 18-year-old daughter appeared in bond court."

Read the Sun-Times story here.

I didn't know she had a knife but I am glad she did. Wow. I don't know what to say to that.

Kendra Jones is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Laura Joslin, a sixth-grader who died after being stabbed in the throat during a clash in the 7300 block of South Claremont.

This has been a topic of discussion with my colleagues, as students in our classes speak to us about how they knew one or both of the girls involved in this tragedy. All I know is that a sixth grader is dead, stabbed in the throat.

Then I stumbled across this story, all 4 sentences of it, that describes a shooting in Pilsen that resulted in two teens being seriously injured. The shooting took place very close to St. Ann Elementary School. UPDATE: The Tribune now has a longer story and confirms that the students who were shot attended Juarez H.S.

Even if we are lucky enough to have good security in our buildings, the fact is violence is very much a part of the fabric of our student's lives and the community in which they live.

Several teachers have spoken with me about violent female students. They share their sense that things are out of hand with our female students and that they witness young women exhibiting violent outbursts at a higher rate than the boys.

What is your sense of this phenomenon? How do you deal with these issues in you school, classroom, community?

I am at a loss for words.

The students in my life skills class discuss female violence openly. Their take seems to be it is young women desperate for approval who don't really want to fight each other. There is debate over how much of the violence is directly attributed to vying for young men, but a lot of conflict seems driven by "mean girl" insults of how a student's appearance. I have also noted that many students are being expelled for having weapons and at least some of them were for self-defense. Of course they still could be used to kill someone, so I don't know how meaningful the distinction is.

In the case of Kendra Jones those girl had tried to jump on her sister three times. They would come to her house every time she left and was ran away by the family two time prior. They are a female gang that has beat up several kids in the area. She went down to tell them to leave her sister alone. They left and was returning home when 7 to 15 of those girls and one 27 year old woman ran behind them and jumped them and tried to beat her to death. In the course of trying to save her and her sister life, she did what she had to. Kendra is a a senior in high school,a single mother and worked a night job. She has no history of violence nor has she been in trouble before. There were at least 7 witnesses that gave this statement. The police and the states attorney know this. But because the girl was only 12 yrs old they are trying to railroad her. I feel very sorry for the young girl that lost her life. But let's take a look at what happened, she was involved in a gang beating and unfortunately the young one usually get hurt.
What should happen is her family should be charged with child endangerment. If you are being beat to the point that you had to be hospitalized and passed out several times from that beating, WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO SAVE YOUR LIFE?
Get a clue they are a gang with a history of beating down everyone that they don't like.
Tell me. What do you call 20 people jumping two with weapons(chains and blunt objects, A family or a GANG.
If you believe that one normal person would jump on twenty I have some property that I want to sell you.
